Apartment Dog Breed Finder

Answer seven quick questions about your home, your schedule and your neighbors. The finder ranks the 40 breeds from our Apartment Dog Breed Scorecard against your answers and shows the five that fit best.

1. How much room do you have?
2. On a workday, how long is the dog alone?
3. How thin are your walls?
4. How much exercise can you give every day?
5. How do you feel about dog hair and brushing?
6. Is this your first dog, or are there young kids at home?
7. Largest dog your lease or you will accept?

How the matching works

Every breed on the scorecard has a 1 to 5 rating for six things that decide how apartment life goes: barking, indoor energy, time alone, floor space, grooming and how forgiving it is with a first-time owner or kids. Your answers change how much each rating counts. Thin walls push quiet breeds up. Long workdays reward dogs that cope alone. A weight limit removes anything too big for your lease.

A breed sets the odds, not the outcome. Exercise, training and the individual dog matter just as much, so use the results as a shortlist and meet a few dogs before you commit.

The American Kennel Club makes the same two points in its apartment guide: “many dogs are born and bred homebodies, happy to lounge around at home without too much exercise”, but “if you love regular trips to the park, you may be in trouble”, and some breeds are “famed for not being big barkers — a godsend if you have noise-sensitive neighbors” (AKC, The Best Dog Breeds for Apartment Living). That is why the finder weights exercise and wall thickness, not floor area alone.
